At the October 12, 2012 Florida Board of Medicine meeting, the Board of Medicine held two special presentations as part of the ongoing effort to promote the health and safety of both residents and visitors in the State of Florida.

The first presentation was held for Trine Engebretsen-Labbe, a 4th year medical student at Florida International University (FIU) who was presented with the Chairman’s Recognition Award. The award was created to honor students that exemplify the professionalism, moral character, compassion, and intellect essential to the future leaders of the medical profession. Trine Engebretsen-Labbe is set to graduate in 2013 as part of the inaugural class of FIUs Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

The second presentation recognized members of a Joint Task Force comprised of members from the FBI, the DEA, the IRS, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The task force was designed in an effort to reduce the number of clinics prescribing and distributing illegal prescription drugs—or “pill mills”—throughout the State of Florida. The presentation honored the following members of the Joint Task Force:

Paul Schwartz, Assistant US Attorney
Larry LaVecchio, Assistant US Attorney
Special Agent Jennifer J. Turner
Special Agent Kurt McKenzie
Special Agent Michael H. Burt
Special Agent David Keyes
Investigative Analyst Dara Shapiro
Susan Langston
Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti

The efforts carried out by this Joint Task Force will help to save countless lives not only in the State of Florida, but throughout the entire country.

Both Trine Engebretsen-Labbe and the members of the Joint Task Force truly exemplify what it means to hold up the Department of Health’s mission and goals, and we thank them and congratulate them for their accomplishments.
