Texas aids sheltering evacuees in accessing prescription medications

Posted in Latest News on September 12, 2017.

In response to Hurricane Harvey, Texas created a statewide program to aid sheltering evacuees in accessing prescription medications – many of these evacuees did not have insurance or could not afford copays due to the impact of the hurricane. Copies of the Texas documentation are available here.

On Tuesday, September 12, 2017, Florida Department of Health held a discussion of the Texas model. The discussion covered Florida Governor Rick Scott’s Executive Order 2017-235, giving authority to the Director of the Division of Emergency Management to take any action necessary to suspend any statute, rule or order that would prevent, hinder or delay mitigation, response or recovery necessary to cope. Subsequently, Emergency orders 2017-002 and 2017-003 were issued suspending adherence to statutes and rules under chapter 465, F.S., to the extent that they would limit distribution, dispensing or administration of legitimate prescription drugs up to 30-days. The sole exception is Schedule II drugs under chapter 893, FS. Participants were advised that the Emergency orders were intended to have broad interpretation for pharmacists and pharmacies so that as many as possible of the affected citizens and visitors of Florida could receive needed medications.
