Complaints that present an immediate threat to public safety are given priority; however, all complaints are investigated as timely as possible. CMU is responsible for ensuring that licensees comply with the terms and penalties imposed in final orders issued by the 22 boards. ISU investigates complaints against health care practitioners and facilities and establishments regulated by the Department. ISU functions as the investigative arm of MQA. The ISU staff includes professional investigators, licensed dentists, nurses, and pharmacists who conduct inspections, interviews, and collect evidence. Cases of most significant concern with the potential for immediate threat to the public (e.g., over-prescribing, practice- related arrests, sexual assault/misconduct) are designated as Priority 1. The target for completing the investigation of these cases is 12 days. Priority 1 cases completed within 12 days were 92.52 percent in FY 2020-21. 8 Annual Report and Long-Range Plan 2020-21
